SO I recently bought a used roughhouse R50, and the previous owner threw in a new bottle of 2 stroke oil.
I have heard you should top off the 2 stroke oil every 100 miles or so, or fill up when the blue light goes on on the dash. Well after 50 miles I decided to check. I opened up the bottle and couldn't even see the oil inside so I opened the bottle and poured in the oil. I ended up using over just over half of the bottle before the tank was full!
Does this mean I was completely empty before? Also now when I start it, it doesn't start up immediately, it just takes a tiny jab of the throttle and then its fine.
Any long term damage, or is this normal once the level goes lower? Anything I should do/be looking out for? It still runs fine, tops off about 43-45 mph.

Robbie is correct. I try to fill mine up where the light starts to blink(going up hills or around corners shifts the oil around). The last time I filled up, I ran it for a week or so with the light on so it was really really low and it allllmost swallowed a whole quart. I barely have any left in the bottle so I would guess that the tank is about a quart.

A full resovior does hold approximately 3/4 of a quart. A quart of oil should get you about 1000 miles. No need to top off every 100, just watch for the low oil light and visually monitor your resovior periodically. Try not to use any TCW rated 2 stroke, that's marine oil, and may cause excessive smoke out the exhaust. From your description of the oil added you still had plenty in there so you should be good to go.

Thanks for the input guys! Yeah I commuted to work this morning no problem. I will have to check the reservoir when I go home, as when I came out to the scoot this morning I had to get to work but it had fluid that had spilled out of the panel in front of the reservoir. Hopefully nothing bad, maybe the cap came off?

Is there any concern beyond smoke from the exhaust? Is there any danger from using it? One of the reasons I went with it is that I was told it would have better cold weather performance, and I ride daily in subfreezing temperatures in the winter here.

I wasn't going to get into the TCW or ASC or JSC certification but it seems to continually pop up. I use "Dumonde Tech Z1/TCW" and I have personally spoke with Rod Falkner the guy that owns/formulates for Dumonde Tech. Dumonde Tech oil has been used as the oil of choice for numerous world record setting races from "pikes peak" to the "bonnevile flats". The formulations on some of these oils are changing fast enough that it is cost prohibitive to get them recertified. A TCWIII rated oil is not necessarily a poor choice for use in an air cooled 2T. In short there are plenty of oils out there that can be used succesfully for both marine and land use. Oil additive technology has come a long ways just in the last 10 years and some of the information that may have been true in the past may be no longer relevent.
