helmets in storage
Hey guys,
What size and model helmets do you have fitting into your underseat carrier? My current helmet, a medium-sized GMAX Gm48 feels like it barely fits:
Thinking about a new helmet, mainly due to an online clearance price for the modular Bell Revolver. I know I need to obviously try it on in person, but will need the car to reach the "closest" shop. Assuming it fits my head, I then need to figure out how to physically test it in the Blur.
As you can see, it's a pretty different profile, and it'll 'sit' differently inside at a different angle for the hump. Was just wondering what you guys use and how comfortably it fits inside the storage. Any modular helmet recommendations? I'll probably be between a medium to large helmet size.
Thanks!

I have had XL shoeis and XL Scorpions under there. The only helmet i've ever not been able to fit was an XXL modular HJC, and I'd bet the XL modulars wouldn't either, most modulars are huge compared to regular FFs.

I've got a XXL Scorpion exo-400 stashed in mine. It fits perfectly. But lately I've been using the helmet hooks to lock it with the bike so I can store stuff in the storage.

I have the Bell Revolver and it does "fit". I believe mine is a Large. But by "fitting", I mean barely and it is snug and takes a bit of pressure to close the seat to latch. Because of the tight fit, I have very little room for anything else so I am just carrying the helmet and storing other stuff. It is a big helmet...but a good helmet. I ordered the Shad 40 topcase for extra storage and the Genuine Rack for mounting...which should arrive soon. for added range I also carry 3 Brunton 1 litre spare fuel bottles with me so space is needed. Will post pics when all installed. (Ordered the windshield also)
Hope this helps a bit.
Take a really good look at the Helmet when you get a chance...especially the sun visor in the closed position.

Thanks! Your post is super duper helpful: I now know the large will fit, but barely. I'm trying to track one down in person, and not many are local, so actually taking the Blur to test the underseat storage would have added a lot of difficulty.turboscott wrote:I have the Bell Revolver and it does "fit". Still need to go find it though to check sizing.
My GM48 (I wear a medium)
........hat size................measurement (inch)
MD........ 7 1/4 - 7 3/8........22 3/16 - 23 1/4
LG........ 7 1/2 - 7 5/8........23 5/8 - 24
The Revolver
........hat size ................measurement (inch)
MD........ 7 1/8 - 7 1/4........22 3/8 - 22 3/4
LG........ 7 3/8 - 7 1/2........23 1/4 - 23 5/8
Doh! I'm guessing I'll probably have to go up to large, since my GM48 is a bit tight on my cheeks (great for the forehead though). I read the Revolver fits a bit smaller, but it still might be too close to make a judgement call without testing it. Curse on the lack of local options..in LOS ANGELES of all places! I've been in contact with Bell to track down local dealers.
Scott, would really appreciate any feedback and experiences you've had with this helmet....is something up with the sun visor? I'm used to just a tinted shield overall.
I'm anticipating the extra weight, since it's a modular. Never had one before, so probably won't notice if it's heavier than other modulars. But at $110 at Revzilla, I'm itching. The major complaint I've heard with this helmet is noise levels. But I'm on a scooter, not a highway cruising motorcycle or a sport bike, so I imagine the noise issue may not really apply. (And I rarely ever go above 50mph yet).
Again, thanks for the post. Really cheered me up to learn the large fits and latches. Cheers!

Personally is its versatility I like most overall. Modular helmets have several pros obviously. I got mine (Matte Black) at a good deal but no where near the Revzilla price...I would jump on that price for this helmet. The helmet however is loud and windy at speeds and bobbles yoru head around a bit with its size and weight...good ventilation though. It is hard to compare to others are far as actual noise since this is my first closed face helmet. I also own a Bell Moto 8 Motocross that I use for my jetski fun. I tried to wear a set of foam earplugs and it actually made me hear the bike vibrations and road noise through my bone sturcture if that makes any sense...it made it worse for me. At first I thought there was something wrong with the bike itself. I may try some custom fit plugs to reduce this effect. My pet peave for it though...is the sun shield on mine in the up position sits crooked and I can see the right edge hanging down lower than the left edge. Its annoying to me as I see it and just get bugged about it. I have not actually compared it to others to see if it is just a flaw on mine or common to all. Overall it is still not a deal breaker and I would by the helmet again. It is comfortable for me...but may not be for all.
Hope this helps more. But please check it out really good in the store when you get a chance.

I'll be sure to play with the sun visor when I find the closest retailer.
Regarding bobbling/noise, since I can't test ride the helmet...I imagine is starts off subtly and then picks up in intensity. I noticed I bobble a bit when I hit 65/70 with my current helmet, I can start to feel it weakly around 50mph. (no windshield on my blur). With the revolver, do you start to feel it at 30mph? 40mph? Guessing probably at least a little by 50mph.
Well, either it bobs sooner or just stronger, which may be a drag. No pun intended... I've only ever worn full face, so I guess I need hands on experience to be able to tell if the extra noise bugs me.
Thanks, I think those are the final questions, heh. How rare is it to be able on the Internet to asksomeone with frsthand experience with the same ride? Very neat.

I wish I could hit 70 on mine...lol. Seems to hit a wall at 61 or so via gps.
The bobbin happens at over 50...but its not bad. I bought a face mask, gloves and cover today to be more cold weather ready. The helmet was freezing my neck this morning on my thirty mile commute to work.

Since we're sort of on the subject, does anyone have any recounts of how the Bell Revolver fits compared to other brands? I've been thinking about one of them as well, but there's zilch to try on locally so I'm very hesitant.
Check out Scoot Richmond's new site: My awesome local shop.

I did try on a few different ones and it felt good to me out of the ones I tried. Maybe about 12 different helmets total, but chose this one because of the modular design. Since everyone's face and head is shaped different you wont get a resounding result for any helmet particular. There were a couple arai and shoei models I loved and then some I hated. I also tried the seven zero seven brand at Cycle Gear..and they felt good too. (Made sense as I think they are made by Bell if I am not mistaken) For my Bell, I dont like the foam around my chin area so tight...its a 45mm pad I believe...but is should break in over time and become normal. If not I am going to look for a 35mm pad set if they make it. Is there something specifically you are looking for I may be able to help with?Lostmycage wrote:Since we're sort of on the subject, does anyone have any recounts of how the Bell Revolver fits compared to other brands? Overall I think it fits me well. The crown area is very comy....and as I said it has thick padding.
