My latest theft-deterrent ideas!

Post by SF Pamplona »

I'm a Buddy owner who lives in an apartment in a busy City in a busy neighborhood. Scooters get stolen all the time. I have been contemplating all the different ways to mitigate my theft risks, and I've read so many articles, and of course, much of the posts from Modern Buddy as well.

Currently, my setup includes a front disk lock, a rear cable lock (has to be really thin to fit through the rear Buddy rim unfortunately) and a cover which I always use overnight. However, my mind still becomes preoccupied with how to prevent myself from becoming another victim.

This week, however, I had somewhat of a revelation. I was on the 6th floor of my office building on Sunday morning, and I noticed that a man was checking out Scoots McGillicutty. He was REALLY checking her out, and I could see him from my window-view vantage point, but he couldn't see me. Rare opportunity to check out a potential thief in his natural habitat and from a safe vantage point.

At first, he was just staring, but then he started pacing in circles around her, and finally, he even started getting handsy! Hands on grips, hands on the seat, hands on gauges. It immediately made me thankful that I place the Prima cover on her overnight. I store it in the top case, and it's quick and painless to toss it on and back off again, such a small price to pay for extra piece of mind.

Lately though, I've been checking out just how dirty this cover gets from enduring the grime of these city streets... Filthy really, and that's the worst part about it, having to remove the filthy cover by hand each time before haphazardly folding up and storing. However, it's obviously a benefit as well because the grime does not touch my scoot, and it tends to stay relatively clean.

Then it hit me... I have it all wrong! If I don't like touching a filthy cover then others won't either. The filthier the better! In fact, why not take it to the extreme? This made we think that no one is going to choose to mess with a covered scoot/motorcycle that is seemingly swimming in barf and blood.

That's another excellent idea. This stuff has to work at least as well as an alarm.

Good idea but it's a bit flawed as you may come across some one who just doesn't care or wears gloves...

Every theft deterrent is flawed, and that's why they call it a "deterrent" and not a "prevention". Some deterrents, however, will tend to deter more than others. If a cover looks disgusting, it's human nature that would deter some and not deter others. It's just another line of defense.

Exactly. If someone really wants to steal your bike, you cannot stop them. The goal is to discourage people just enough that they don't bother taking the trouble. Remember: you don't have to outrun the bear, you just have to outrun the other guy. :)

Considering I often park among a group of scooters in some street-side moto parking, I'm thinking they will try to snatch that uncovered Vespa first. ;-)

Get a shallow, light colored (for contrast) plastic pan, pour in just enough high-gloss black or dark brown latex paint to make it look like a 4-5" puddle of recent, dirty motor oil that dripped from above, let dry. Place under scoot at night.

Who wants to steal a junker with a blown engine that leaks that much? :)

Another great idea! It would fun to do a little photo essay while employing all of the theft deterrent ideas that everyone has brought forth and put them all into action at the same time.

Speaking of theft, is anyone else planning to put one of the new trackers that are all the rage on Indiegogo and Kickstarter on their scoots? I pledged for two different versions, one from two different campaigns. The one from Trackr Bravo looks really good I think and includes crowd-sourced GPS.

Good idea

I am blessed to have a garage at home but I do want to come up with a good deterrent for when we are out and about. I will watch this thread for ideas. Thank you for starting this one. I think this is an important issue to all scooter owners.
