August Scavenger Hunt (Week 3) Statue

Sorry for the delay on this, I had some things come up that took all my time.
This has no ties to anything. Just popped in my head.
+2 For your scooter in picture
+2 For you in the picture
+10 for a statue of an animal (or animals) in the picture (not lawn ornaments, actual statues). Only 10 points, no matter how many animal statues are in the picture.
+2 for each letter in the common name of the type of animal (deer = 8 pts., elephant = 16 pts., etc.) No limit on the number on animal statues in the pic. If you find a statue of 3 orangutans waged in epic battle with 4 polar bears, you got 54 bonus points for the orangutans and 72 bonus points for the polar bears (orangutan is 9 letters * 2pts * 3 of them = 54).
+1 for first entry
Since I was late on posting this, this Hunt ends at MIDNIGHT, Monday, August 24, 2009. New hunt will be posted Sunday morning.
-Only one photo may be submitted by each member for each week’s subject. (But if you get a better pic later in the week, PLEASE edit your original post note that you posted a better pic and note in the newer post that it is a replacement for a previous pic.)
-Old photos you have lying around can NOT be used- they must be NEW photos taken the week the photo subject was posted
-10 BONUS POINTS (good anytime all summer) for a photo of you getting a ticket (photo must include your scooter & a cop writing the ticket) only one of these may be submitted per player. (Thanks to kazoo for the suggestion)
(Edit – you don’t have to be REALLY getting a ticket… if you can get a cop to pose like he/she is writing you a ticket, that is good enough)
-No Photoshop submissions

Sweet!! I have several cops in the church I pastor! Do I get bonus points for having more than one cop?

That's been an ongoing "bonus point" thing from the original hunts last summer. One cop or 300 cops, still 10 points.

Do INSECT statues count? They are living creatures, IF they weren't statues that is.... ?

FIXED - REAL - METAL OR WOOD OR SOMETHING THAT IS NOT MOVEABLE - STATUES OF WHAT ARE normally living things, right?
I've got to get the rules down good, or I'll be sure to get it wrong.....
No lawn-ornament animals on sticks, right? (Darn!)

Right. Insects count. No latin names. A grasshopper is a grasshopper.

People count ("human" for scoring).

Now, where will I find an "Epic Animal Battle" statue? Think, think, think.

So is it +10 for EACH sculpture and +1 point for each letter in the animals' common name?
Or is the 10 points for animal sculpture only counted once?

Good catch. +10 for the animal statue only counted once. You get the extra points in the common names of the animals.

Do Human statues ('sculptures') count?
I'm confused now. Please share the math again on example:
a Buffalo statue. Would that be +10 for the statue AND + 7 for each letter = 17 for one statue of a buffalo?
I'm just heading out for the photo-op afternoon; might as well stay home with that GREAT first pic! Very Nice.

I wasn't going to count the people until I read OrangeGuy's post:
Orange Guy wrote:People count ("human" for scoring).
Anyways, you get 10 points for a a statue (any animal statue) in your picture, but you don't get 10 points for EVERY ANIMAL, it only counts once.

That appears to be a business that sells lawn ornaments. My intent for statues was more of "on a pedastal in the town square" kind of thing. Those are moveable type things (except maybe that buffalo!).

Doh! I was worried that might be the case, that's why I said I would find something else if it didn't count... I must've missed the part about "no lawn ornaments"... anyways other animal sculptures downtown that would count are even smaller than these so-called lawn ornaments.
Week 3 from Cecijinetta aka "Buddyfly"

Okay folks, This wasn't easy, but there's a diner several miles from my home called the Black Bear Diner (sign is in the picture). They had a LOT of fixed Black Bear statues on every corner of their building. Here's my calculation:
2 - My Buddyfly scooter
2 - Me in the picture (with the vest on!)
1 - First posting for Week 3
10 - Statue(s)
198- 11 Black Bears in picture with me (detailed below)
11 x 9 letters x 2 = 198
-------------
213 Total
My math on Black Bears; Since Orange Guy used Polar Bear in his example; There are 11 Black Bears in mine (really 13 but 2 are harder to see): A family of 5 in the near-front of the picture (Papa Bear, Mama Bear standing, and 3 Baby Bears on the swing); There's a bear on the box to the right of the 'family' and in front of the Diner Signage; Look above that bear and see the head of a very tall bear standing next to the flagpole; now in the background are 4 more visible bears (Total 11). Believe it or not, there were more bears at the entrance to this Diner. I also got the Manager's approval to get on the lawn and take pix, but I have to send him this pic after posting. whew! I've even named these critters:
Mama Bear, Papa Bear & 3 little baby bears (Larry, Moe & Curly Joe)
6 Younger bears; OC Bear (obsessive/comp), Bi-Polar Bear, Barely Bare, Fulla-Bear, Not-So Bear, and of course Buddy-Bear.
Bonus 10 points

Wow Ceci, that's gonna be tough to beat. Nice job.
I just would like to see a bigger pic of the first one, I can count all the bears but some are hard to see much detail on.

If anyone wants a bigger pic, give me your email. I was forced into this size due to the constraints of pixel size. I'm happy to send the original anywhere. It's 72kb in size exported as a web page. If you want the .jpg file, that one is 72kb but the pixels were too big to post. let me know!

thank you very much. I need to learn how to get these bigger on this site somehow; I appreciate you. Now you can actually see there are 5 bears in the back-grouping and I only counted 4; and there's another bear slightly sticking out right behind Papa Bear's overalls - you can see it's ears and the back of it's head.
I lucked out as long as this is approved. They are firmly attached and not movable in any way. It was a fluke that I passed by this place, and even weird-er that they have up to 20 Black Bears for the "Black Bear Diner" (Beaverton, Oregon). The place is not even as big as a Sheri's Restaurant.

No problem at all. I just uploaded it to my photobucket account and then linked it to the forum post.

Your pic looks great, and I'm going to be very surprised if someone is able to beat your score this week.

Until yesterday, I thought something like this would be killer. That's what you get for thinking!
+2 For your scooter in picture
+10 for a statue of an animal
+6 - 1 Elk x 3 letters x 2 points
+3 - 1 Cow x 3 letters x 2 points
+30 - 3 Horse x 5 letters x 2 points
+30 - 3 Human x 5 letters x 2 points
81 Points.
One of the humans, horses and the cow are hard to see, even in the blowups I pasted in the pic, so here's a link to a better angle (It's titled On a Crash Course):

CLUE: I "almost" rode down to Chinatown and had someone take a pic of me, shooting "UP" at the top of a building that has those 12-creatures for each year - know what I mean? It would be fun to see.

Newbie Makes The Grade

Here goes – Sunday after church we went out for lunch on our Buddy’s and to capture what we could on such an awesome August day in Texas! We have a much larger shot showing better detail to see what you are looking at yet left to right there are 6 Texas Longhorn’s with a mounted Cowboy on his horse right off the back of Texas Longhorn #5, then jumping further right there is another mounted Cowboy on his horse leading another 3 Texas Longhorns, one of which is coming up out of the draw, the other two have just broken through the stone wall – well, as they are statues, they are kind of frozen there with the stone wall all shattered like.
Every now and then you can hear a rock hit the ground, the ground shakes with the violent hoof beats… no that’s another story…
Oh, that is me on my 08 Buddy International Italia riding on the side walk to get this shot!
+2 For scooter in picture
+2 For owner in the picture
+10 for a statue of an animal (or animals)
+2 for each letter in “Cowboy” (2 x 6 x 2 = 24)
+2 for each letter in “Horse” (2 x 5 x 2 = 20)
+2 for each letter in “Texas Longhorn” (9 x 13 x 2 = 234)
2 + 2 + 10 + 24 + 20 + 234 = 292 total points!
In regards to "Texas Longhorn" being a common name as opposed to "Cow" or "Steer", remember this is Texas and Texas Longhorn IS the common name and very much respected! LOL

Very nicely done, and having spent a summer in San Antonio I can attest that those are Texas Longhorns and not just "cows", "steers" or your average "longhorns" which can be found in states like Oklahoma.

It's all good, except for the "cowboy" part. Just like Syd did, each of those are considered a "human".
Well done!
New (and final August) hunt coming in a little bit.
You all did a great job on this on. Love the statues.

Nice catch, missed that on the first read, only costs 4 points though, if only she'd had gotten a ticket.
Re-Calculation of Black Bears
Posted: Mon Aug 24, 2009 3:14 pm
by Cecijinetta
So, with all the action this week, may I now calculate the 2 Black Bears in my picture above that are harder to see, but certainly not harder than some other statues?
I would still be under the Longhorns count, but it's real.
There are 5 Black Bears in the background where it looks like four, but a closer look reveals 5.
There are the ears and back of the head of a Black Bear sticking out from Papa Bears overalls.
If approved, that would add 9 x 2 x 2 = 36.
My Grand total this week would be:
213 - original 11 bears
10 - getting a ticket
36 - Really 13 Black Bears
-----------
279. Orange Guy - do you approve?
HUMAN EDIT - Total Points Corrected
Posted: Tue Aug 25, 2009 2:32 am
by MYSCTR
So is this correct with the "Human" edit for "Cowboy"?
+2 For scooter in picture
+2 For owner in the picture
+10 for a statue of an animal (or animals)
+2 for each letter in “Human” (2 x 5 x 2 = 20)
+2 for each letter in “Horse” (2 x 5 x 2 = 20)
+2 for each letter in “Texas Longhorn” (9 x 13 x 2 = 234)
2 + 2 + 10 + 20 + 20 + 234 = 288 total points!
