vehicle wrap for Rattler

Here's a photo of an idea I've been toying with - graphic wraps (the same that are done for vehicles) I have a friend who does these as his trade, we'll be in the process of working out some designs/substrates this winter.

What kind? Digital/pixel camo like this?

that carbon fiber one looks pretty good. is that already done or is it a photoshop pic?

it's a photoshop pic. I have a mask set up in layers, so I can drop any texture/pattern/color in very fast if you have any ideas.

wow, you are pretty good at that. would you be willing to do something similar to that to a pic of my car?

i have an MS paint version of what i want that i could send to you

sure - let me take a look at your version first.

that is bad ass

Any idea what that something like this would cost?

great question. that's one of the things I'm going to be figuring out with that friend of mine this winter. With his ability, materials and equipment to do vehicle wraps and my graphic-sense to provide artwork, we're going to see what we can do. I will definitely keep you in the loop through this site and GenuineRattler as things progress.

Your photoshop work is amazing.

Every time i want to do something i have to teach myself how to do it. I think i know 2% of what the program can do.

Is there a simply way to explain how you made that?

Posted: Thu Oct 23, 2008 3:17 pm
by Evans Performance
that is awesome.

Hey MacJac, did you get my PM about my car?

Posted: Thu Oct 23, 2008 3:32 pm
by alienmeatsack
FWIW... to get an idea of cost, SignsNow charges about $12.50 a square foot to install wrap material on any vehicle. I think they told me a minimum of $20-30 was required. But that they'd do any kind of vehicle.

I don't know if they use 3M material but I was told it's the best choice and leaves the least sticky stuff when removing the wrap.

that sounds like it would work out to around $100. thats not a bad price at all for something like that.

That, of course, assumes you provide them with your graphics ready to go.

Many places that charge more are also providing graphic work in the cost.

I think the nice thing about this "Rattler" deal is that once one of you makes a good template, everyone else can just use the template to toss in some textures or whatever and make it easier to get nice designs for cheap.

I've been considering doing the cowls on my Stella with this stuff too.

The one thing to consider is that its placement is not perfect, and as they heat, stretch, bend and pull to fit the wrap, things can get out of alignment from one part of the body to the next. The way it was explained to me, they recommended that you use a texture or similar in the background that does not visually need to lineup to anything, then put your specific more focused graphics on top of that. So as they place the wrap, the seems from one piece of wrap to the next on the body of the scooter/car/whatever are not obviously incorrectly lined up.

Maybe this is just their way of avoiding to have to spend the time to get it all lined up. I don't know as I've never personally installed the stuff.

Anyone got any ideas if this is the case for real?

the wraps are usually quite a bit too big. then it can be moved around to make it line up with all of the stretching. what they say is true, but it is possible to get it all to work out, they just might not want to work that hard. it isnt easy.i have done some very similar things

Thanks Evans - I didn't check my PM's. I'll take a look.

Ray - unfortunately it is not easy to explain. I've been using Photoshop for over 10 years. I set up a mask on it's own layer (which took some time on the front end) so then I'd be able to just easily drop images in and wrap very quickly.

This site has some cool military camouflage wraps. Costs range from $42.00 to $70.00 for a 2'x4' sheet. The Diamond Plate Brown would look cool....

Great find DM!

I understand the masking. I don't know how you got the light reflections on the original panel onto your applied graphic. Does it have to do with the blending of the layers (bike and graphic)

The diamond plate camo looks great but for $70 for a 2'x4' sheet... Yikes

Macjac, can you stick this image on your pic

it's just a matter off making the texture a semi-transparent to reveal the reflections in the solid black original paint job underneath. That's the trick to making it look realistic. If I get some down-time this afternoon (or tonight) I'll add your texture.

Evans - are you looking to go right up to the window molding with the silver - or a little below? I probably won't have time to do this until the weekend, but I'll try to do it earlier. BTW - How much are those Rattler racks you make? I know Scoot Lemont had one, but didn't know they're yours - nice work!!!!

no hurry on doing my car. i have been trying to get someone to do it for a year, a few days is fine. i want the silver to be about 3" under the window. there is a body line i plan to follow if i paint the car that way, i just cant make up my mind if i really want to go through with it.

the racks are $65 including shipping if you pay by check or money order and $70 including shipping if you pay with paypal. i prefer paypal cause it makes the transaction go faster since i dont start making the rack till payment clears and it also makes the customer feel better cause there is a 3rd party involved. the only reason paypal is more is to cover the fees. so far all purchases have been paid by check

I forgot where I grabbed this down from - but it ain't photoshop'd.
Does anyone know where this photo came from? Looks like it was up on eBay by the bug in the upper left-hand corner (?)

Thanks for the pricing Evans - I'll be looking for a rack at some point before next spring.

I think that's a PGO available in Canada. Forgot the model name.

urban camo would be sweet looking on it i think. it'd match the silver and black of it fairly closely.

Mac,
Thanks, that does look really cool. Now I wonder what the front would look like. There are a lot of curves, and a wrap might be tricky to apply but I bet it would look great. This winter I plan on using the Diamond Plate Cammo(If I cant find the Urban Digital wrap)

your work is awesome. i have tried to learn photoshop before and i can manage to make some things happen, but i usually just get frustrated.

i hate to be picky, but could you make the bumper and molding silver also?

Posted: Wed Nov 05, 2008 1:29 am
by MacJac
Thanks. Here's one with the molding and bumper silver. I also have a black Civic. It's a '99 and beat to hell. But still runs great.

Posted: Wed Nov 05, 2008 2:07 am
by Evans Performance
thats perfect. i think i am going to paint it like that. i might put a blue stripe to break the black and silver like what was on the moldings but im not sure.

civics are great cars. that one is about to put 500hp to the wheels. right now its about half that, but with such little weight it really moves

Oooooo, needs a black mesh type grille in the lower bumper. The three bars have got to go.

the completely stock bumper adds to the sleeperness of it. but then again, adding the silver is going to take that away. i am really up in the air about it

Posted: Wed Nov 05, 2008 4:34 pm
by MacJac
Completely understandable about it being a sleeper - but I had to try it:

Posted: Wed Nov 05, 2008 6:07 pm
by Evans Performance
this may be a long shot, but is there anyway you could add a blue stripe to break the silver and black that is roughly the same color as the moldings? on the car i guess it would be like 1/4-1/2" in size

Posted: Wed Nov 05, 2008 6:18 pm
by MacJac
Do you want it done to the pic with blue moldings, or the last one that has silver moldings?

Posted: Wed Nov 05, 2008 6:30 pm
by MacJac
I did it to the last one - I assumes that's the one you wanted to have it done to:

Posted: Wed Nov 05, 2008 6:33 pm
by Evans Performance
that was the one i wanted. that looks good, but really ruins it as a sleeper. i guess with my business i should have an eye catching car though

ha ha. i asked him in a PM to do this for me but he couldnt post the pics in a PM for some reason, so he posted them here.
