Headlight Burning Out

Post by JewelryMonk »

HELP
I could use some guidance:
My headlight burned out on my Roughhouse,
I purchased a new PIAA 70473 Super Plasma GT-X HS1 Bulb
Installed it, worked great for 20 seconds.
It has now burned out!!! ($2 per second)
I am reluctant to put another one in until I trace the problem.
Any suggestions where to look?

Check the system voltage with a voltmeter. I used a cheap “cigarette lighter style that plugs into the accessory outlet. If the voltage is high - check for a disconnected or poorly-connected ground wire at the back of the regulator (free). Then test or replace the regulator (cheap).

It’s tempting to want to blame the stator (expensive) for producing too much voltage but a bad ground or bad regulator is the much more likely culprit.

Don’t be surprised if other bulbs burn out imminently too as a result of high voltage. The little ones in the instrument panel are cheap and easy to replace with LEDs. I think they’re T5 twist-locks

Another possibility is that the bulb you put in is designed only for DC voltage. The Buddy 50 headlight runs on AC. Traditional bulbs are OK either way but fancy bulbs sometimes need an additional rectifier/regulator to work with AC voltage.
