Airbox modding

Doing a bit of research, I'm getting mixed bits of information when it comes to modding the airbox. One thread had some pictures of a modded airbox but now gone thanks to short timespan of photobucket. So, from the wording I got, some have chopped up the intake port to open it up where others have drilled holes in the cover. I figure the end results would be the same but wanted to check what others have done.
Better pictures than what I've found on these forums would be awesome.
Eventually I'm planning on a good pod filter with a boost bottle, but in the interim... just needs more air for the time being.

Thanks... this is kind of what I was looking for. Do you know how this compares to using a pod filter with a boost bottle? The blow back from the downstroke would go back into the airbox receiving a little resistance... but shouldn't the boost bottle effectively do the same yet achieve better intake airflow?

The modded airbox is pretty close in flow to a Uni pod or Arreche Racing Airbox (also a pod). Mine is slightly different then when that was posted, but you get the idea. The modded airbox is less loud compared to a pod. Pods on a 2T motor generate alot of intake noise.

Ive got a prima pipe on my 110, if I did the air box mod, would I HAVE to rejet? Thanks

If modding the airbox, you are allowing more airflow... for that you then need to ensure you can give it more fuel. If the rat hasn't been given an upjet with the pipe, you will be required to when you upgrade the airbox. Otherwise, it will bog down when trying to go on a heavier throttle or maxing out your speed.

Ok, ya I bought it modded already so I dont know 100% of the stuff thats in it. But I do know that when Im going down hill WOT at about 52 or 3 it starts making a really weird noise and looses power. I always let off to about 3/4 throttle when that happens and then it speeds back up. It does seem like its kind of choking when that happens. Could that be caused from the jets being too small for the upgrades? Or just its getting old?

Sounds like you have a stock main jet and you already need to upjet. Not sure what the rattler main jet is though.

These look interesting,
stock airbox filters.

IMO if you're gonna drill holes in the outer cover instead of pulling he snorkle and enlarging the inlet, then you might as well just run a pod.

What does pulling the snorkel entail?

Snorkle removal involves first removing the air box, opening up the box (remove fastners) as in replacing the filter, and physically pulling out the rubber snorkle at the inlet. If the inlet isn't further modified then the snorkle can be reinstalled if you want to do that.

Hmmm I'll have to check that out. That just allows more air flow or what?

Yep, w/o the snorkle the intake opening is slightly larger.
