Roughhouse exhaust manifold

Ok, so I took out the restrictor plate, removed it from the gasket and re installed the gasket. I did this about 6 times, and still there is a slight bit of air leaking from the engine block where the exhaust connects.

How can I remedy this?

I had a broken clavicle for 8 weeks, and I finally got a chance to ride my scooter I purchased 3 months ago!!

I love it, it is the red R50, I just want to get these restrictions off.

Any suggestions?

I removed the restrictions as well and still have leaks. Mines not even a full week old. I'm sure there is a different gasket to put in that is taller.

I will take a ride down to a local scooter shop and see if there is a taller gasket. I took it for a ride even with the leak, significant power increase!

Yeah, I love it. I had it up to the "50" mark on a flat from a dead stand still. Still bogs down a little when trying to go up hill... but it will at least hold 35 for me even on some of the steeper grades around town. I haven't even started tuning yet. The first set of parts are coming Thursday.

Did you remove all of the restrictions? I am going to do the variator tomorrow when I get the gasket for the exhaust.

I still have to finish breaking the damn thing in lol.

From what I can tell, all of the restrictions have been removed from stock setup. There are still the airbox, exhaust, and carb that need to be replaced. The carb will be last after the BBK, going to upgrade to a 70cc at least, then swap the engine out over the long haul. Beginning of next month I'll be getting a better pipe, so the real tuning is going to start at that point.

Edit: Oh, as far as breakin goes... just stay off the WOT for any period of time and vary your throttle pretty good on rides. After 200-300 and a good overhaul on oils/lubes/retorking bolts... then you can hold it, but still refrain from WOT until after the grand mark. I haven't done much of any WOT, and still got it up to "50" (it's probably only 45 actual).

Sounds sick, I bet with a BBK and pipes and stuff, these R50's will rip.

Just from removing the re-stricter on exhaust I almost shit.

I figure once the variator re-stricter is off I will have a bit more top end as well. I am pumped, I will refrain from WOT for a while until over 1k miles.

I hit WOT a bit today because it was restricted. I will def refrain now that the restrictions are off.

I thought it was leaking I guess the air was from the cooling fan. I removed the variator and it screams now. I still haven't WOT yet, but its close to 50

Here's a shot of the original gasket and the new gasket. They are identical. The difference is the fact the new one has yet to be crimped in place. I popped the new one in, still had a minor leak at first, but after a few quick runs, the leak was gone completely.

Sorry about the blurry pic... I don't have a decent camera and had to use my phone to take a "macro shot".

For your gasket problems all you need is a plain manilla folder, and clear silicone sealer. Take off old gasket and use as a template, trace said gasket onto folder (pick a spot, yeah that one will do), and don't forget to mark were the bolt's are. Cut out new shim gasket, apply a little silicone to one side of the shim and attach this to the muffler side. For best results allow 12 hrs for silicone to cure and then reassemble. You can reuse the old gasket if its not damaged. Remember this is just a shim and not an actual gasket replacement. If all goes well you should not have any air leaks.

Sorry, I disagree with the ghetto gasket approach. Replacement gaskets are cheap, & fit properly. They are designed to crush when the fasteners are torqued. They are not intended to be reused.

If you desperately need a temporary fix, yes... the manilla folder will work. But just like Milli Vanilli... it's not the real thing. So if you have a scooter shop in the area and have no other way to get there than to use ghettotastic silicon gasket... feel free to do so. However, use a real gasket that was intended for the purpose it was designed for.
