Looking for a performance coil & cap set Buddy 125

Post by DeeDee »

Good evening fellow Buddy fans. Anyone here have a link for a performance coil for the Buddy 125? I'm searching Amazon and Ebay, and finding nothing specific for the Buddy. My plug cap has worn where it connects to the spark plug, and i'm having low speed stalling problems. (I spent two days going through the carb and intake system, but that's for a different thread). I'm hoping someone here has purchased one lately that fits, and will share the link. Thank you in advance.

Sparkplug cap failures are really annoying the first time(or two) they happen. Now it is one of the first things I check when I have an issue.

I have been looking for a good sparkplug cap that fits the Buddy on and off for years. The first time I replaced one I was able to find an NGK(VB05F) cap at the local dealer that was close enough to work(I can check the model number if you want to know.) The next time I had one fail I bought some generic ones like this - https://www.ebay.com/itm/223468209206?h ... SwFXla2CPk
I believe these lasted me about 10k before the metal part that touches the sparkplug wore out.
If you want to gamble for another ~$1 you can get it with a coil - https://www.ebay.com/itm/224478560684?h ... SwIFdgsbPD

With at least some of these caps I believe I was able to reuse the OEM boot so the cap would fit tighter in the plastic around the hole. I know on the generic ones the boot leaves a gap which is probably part of the reason they don't last that long.

I keep thinking about switching to the other cap type. The Buddy spark plus uses a treaded stud but I have been wondering if a solid terminal sparkplug would do a better job holding the cap on and maybe last a little longer.

As for the coil, I have never had one go bad since I usually swap the coil when I change engines so I don't know anything about aftermarket ones. Here is an old thread that might help point you in the right direction - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=16202

Thank you for the replies. I bought a NGK 8052 cap from Oreily's for under $4. I found the part# on Scooter West's site as a Buddy replacement cap. It's longer than the original, and tucks in there a bit odd. I do like NGK quality. All kinds of talk on the Piaggio forums about wanting to get rid of a solid end plug and switching it over to a threaded end. I've had threaded end caps go for 35,000 miles+ on my Yamaha C3 with not a problem. I used diaelectric grease when I put everything back together.

Ok. This boot is for a solid plug top. I want to keep the threaded plug top. I'll try NGK 8060, $2.59 from Napa. Thank you.

If anyone is interested, Autotec355 has the Bando coil set in stock and is running a 4 day sale. Mine just came in the mail. Looks high quality to be sure. I'll install on my 125 during it's next service. https://www.ebay.com/itm/332961324611

So, aside from price, how is this performance coil different from the one ScooterWest and Scooter Works sells? I know the Scooter Works one has a thread on cap. I hate the sealed on ends sometimes. I thought I was "smart" and snipped the broken, sealed end off my Adly RT when I had it, figuring a thread on Zuma cap would work but the wire size was much thinner on the Adly making a good fit a chore.
