Valve Adjustment
Decided it was time to check the valve adjustment on both of my Buddy scooters.
First up was my 2009 Buddy 150 with 4600 miles. I have no idea whether the valve adjustment was ever done on this scooter. Not the original owner. Had a tough time removing the valve cover. Found it best to remove the pet cage to gain full access to the engine surround. Removed the EGR hose from the valve cover side to make it easier to remove the valve cover from the housing area. Found the valve lash to be very tight on both valves. Adjusted the valves with an 0.003" (0.076mm) gauge. This is the closes to 0.08mm I had on hand. While at it, replaced the bystarter (auto choke) valve which may have been bad. It was hard cold starting this scooter. Upon reassembly, the scooter started right up and idled smoothly.
Next was my wife's 2019 Buddy 125 with 900 miles. This will be the 1st valve adjustment on this scooter. Found the intake valve lash to be tight, but the exhaust valve was fine. Upon reassembly, the scooter started up and idled smoothly. Below are some pix for those who like to DIY.

Re: Valve Adjustment
niice, I just bought a used 2017 170i and I'm planning to check the valve spacing soon. I did this a long while back on my 2007 125.

Re: Valve Adjustment
I've worked on a couple of 170is in the past. The exhaust valve was always tight. On mine, I adjust them at every oil change.

Re: Valve Adjustment
Check both yours. If they are fine, and don't need adjusted. Check again at 4k. If they are out of spec, put into spec and check at your next oil change, 2k. My buddy 170i had a tight exhaust valve every 2000 miles. The Buddy 170i I just serviced had a tight exhaust valve (no idea when or if they were checked last). I've been into Buddy 125s with 10,000, valves never checked that were spot on. I don't know for sure, but I believe the fuel injection runs hotter than the non FI Buddy 125.

Re: Valve Adjustment
Thanks for the photos! This is going on the list of things to do this year on my 09 Italia. It only has 1,800 miles (bought it with 400) and I’ve never checked them. Its been in the garage the past five years or so (had kids) only getting a ride around the block every spring/fall. Time to get some miles on her this year now that I’m working closer to home and can use her as a commuter a few days a week. Brake fluid will also be on the agenda.

You are welcome! Brake fluid is the next item that needs to be addressed. Curious, is you 09 Italia a 150 or 50?GrFa wrote: ↑Sun Apr 04, 2021 1:43 am Thanks for the photos! Mine is a 2009 Buddy 150. I've had it for 2 years, put on 3200 miles, odo now reads 4700 miles. Like it a lot! My wife's is a 2019 Buddy 125. We ride them locally, but also take them (in lieu of car) on our RV trips.GrFa wrote: ↑Tue Apr 06, 2021 3:03 amIt is a 150. Yours?BayStateScooterist wrote: ↑Sun Apr 04, 2021 5:35 pmYou are welcome! I just love screw-and-nut valve adjusters! Toyota 22R, VW Bug, Kawi Concours gen 1, Buddy 125. Makes life simple.
