Modern Buddy

All you Modern Buddy peeps helped me find my Chrome Book (greatest thing ever!), now I need ideas for better priced internet connection. We have, I will call them "Sox" to protect their identity, and they charge around $75 a month for internet only. Dont need the latest, greatest, fastest-just reliable. Gonna price out Verizon-even though I dont care for them for my cell service. Any other providers or hidden gems I should look into? Again, any suggestions appreciated!

I'm looking for an affordable internet service myself. At this point in my life, I don't have enough income to afford my own internet service, but luckily, one of my neighboors has an open "guest" connection from which I "borrow" internet time. I also spend a lot of time at coffee shops using their internet for the price of a cup of coffee.

Do they know you're using it?

Since I am generally in the same boat as you. Dropped my internet only home service from "Sox " two weeks ago. Now I am an engineering student, and I kinda need internet. I do live across the street from the university. But having internet is a big deal. Well I just purchased a new phone yesterday and will be giving Tmobile a call for service. Newer phones have tethering capabilities which allows your phone to be your WiFi router. So when I need to get on my tablet, laptop or computer I can connect to WiFi by way of my phone. BUT BE VERY CAREFUL!!! This will run your data usage up through the roof! So an unlimited plan is the best option. I dropped the $63 internet. Changing my monthly cell plan that is 45 a month. And my new plan is 70~75 a month. I won't be tethering watching movies or anything, but a quick email or other check on my puter is doable. If I need extensive usage, i go to the school and use theirs for free.

Something to think about

Personally, I'd dump cable TV before I'd dump internet.

See if you're eligible for internet essentials. I upgraded their crappy modem and router, and switched our landline over to google voice. I have high speed internet and landline for $10.00 per month. Makes up for overpaying all those years.

I'm not sure, but since I work swing shift, I usually log in after midnight when, I assume, they're asleep. The signal is pretty weak so it's a hit and miss afair. I'm thinking they don't know because they haven't shut down the guess connection. Besides that, most people don't know what the flashing LEDs on their modem/router means anyway.
I don't abuse their unintended generosity by streaming a ton of movies or music. Well, I can't anyway because the signal is so weak most of the time.

That's really cheap...so what service are you talking about, I.e., from whom?

Is that $10 added to a regular bill or a stand alone bill? Still doing my research.

That's it. $10 per month for 12 Mbps. Google voice for free. Kept the same landline number I've had since 1990.

Match Google voice with a Chromebook and a prepay Verizon Android smartphone (Motorola Moto G).

4 cell phones, high speed internet and landline for $21.00 total. We use the cell phones on wifi and an occasional text or call.

Nope ScootDave, all my neighbors have their Wi Fi locked. I was the one that let them use our connection in the past (became a problem after awhile). Looks like you found the Holy Grail for affordable Dee Dee. Now I need to look into it. Thanks for the advice everyone, as always!
