Modern Buddy

Reciently I've noticed my 08 Buddy 150 being a bit louder. Yesterday evening I noticed it was burbling and popping, 'farting' on deceleration. Then I see this, pictures below.
Will I do much harm to it running it like this until I get it looked at by my shop? It is my primary vehicle right now.....

Get a damp rag and hold it over the end of the exhaust outlet. It should stall in a few seconds. If it continues to run you have a leak. Me personally, if it has a leak I would get another exhaust ordered and ride it with caution while waiting for the replacement. I have seen people ride scooters with NO exhaust for months without any problems (ghetto scooters) and I have ridden my Buddy 125 for about 1 month with a rusted out/leaking exhaust before the new one (NCY brand. Great price and quality.) showed up in the mail. Did you check if its a loose or missing header bolt or did just the gasket blow apart from age?

Could overheat if you are running lean, suggest checking your plug.

sc00ter, that's a hole in the pipe, I don't need to check for a leak, it's plainly obvious there is one..... I think.

A friend suggested I try some 'muffler tape' or (same guy) cut a piece of tin can and use a couple hose clamps to cover the hole. I'm not too sure how well that'll work, he even gave me some aluminium flashing and two hose clamps to give that a try.
I'll be stopping by my shop Monday, the 'old man' there says he can a look if he can weld or braze it....

If the hole is not that large yet (I could not see anything obvious in the picture posted) I would track down a replacement and either ignore the hole or attempt to patch it till you get another exhaust. Any exhaust repair on a scooter exhaust will eventually fail unlike a car were they cut out the bad and weld in new section. Price out a new O.E.M. or NCY or save some loot and find a good used one.

It's a hole about the size of a dime cut in half with the pieces layed end-to-end. I will look into a patch type thought. The next question is, would a 125 exhaust work on a 150 without any detriment? And is it OK to ride in the meantime?

I "believe" the mufflers are the same for both the 125 and 150, and that makes Mr Stiffy's used muffler a option. I would double check just to make sure.The O.E.M. mufflers are a bit pricey compared to a NCY. The NCY mufflers are BULLET PROOF (you should see what my old Buddy that has one has gone thru!) from both abuse and the elements, and they are not much louder than stock with the silencer cap installed. Again, I personally would just keep riding it until the replacement shows up. You could try some of that putty patch if it really bothers you. When the exhaust rusted out on my 09 Buddy 125 it completely cracked off from the down pipe! I rode it for about 3 weeks loud as crap until the new NCY showed up and nothing bad happened. Also rode a Honda Helix from Baltimore MD to Virginia Beach VA with a muffler snapped off with no problems afterwards. 4 stroke motors are pretty tuff being ridden with broken exhaust, 2 strokes are a whole different story. Your motor is a 4 stroke.

It's obvious from your picture that you've got a hole in your exhaust pipe. To me that means you need to get it replaced and the sooner the better.

We have a 2014 stock exhaust take off (less than 300 miles on it) that will work on any Buddy 150/170. Just hanging around waiting for a scooter that needs it.

The 125 exhaust has a smaller exhaust port and you would not want that on a 150.

I have a new Prima stainless exhaust I'll sell you for $160 shipped.

Thanks everybody, when the question went out there as to which exhaust is compatible for my 150 I stopped in my shop which was planned anyway. There wasn't much metal to weld, the 'old man' thought he could braze a patch on however there's quite a bit of rust on my pipe that wasn't seen until we all inspected it more closely.
While discussing 125-150-170 pipe interchangeability, Jr said they've got one that was a 'take off' from a brand new scoot when the purchaser wanted a 'Prima' right out of the box, I was able to pick that up for $85.

I took that home, the shop is only 4 miles down the road and installed it within the hour. I also finally got around to swapping out my bad headlight with the help of my son....

Good to hear all ended well and you got two good upgrades for your Buddy. We appreciate the info on the take off price from your dealer as we have not seen that before and it sounds like they are good people! Congrats!

They are slightly different. The 150 pipe is longer and flows slightly better. Not sure you'll be able to tell the difference though.
