Modern Buddy

After services this morning, a young woman and her child were walking past me in the parking lot when the kid pointed at the Helix and asked his Mom, "Mommy, what's that?". Without batting an eye she told him, "That? Oh, it's a big moped; isn't it cute?"

Two knees to the groin in a single sentence: a new record for me.

This thread is a perfect example of why we lobbied ericalm for a facepalm emoticon. And now, without further adieu:

Oh, it's the norm around here. Scooters are few and far between in my part of NJ, which is predominantly luxury-lease-land. I think I'm the only guy in town who drives a Chevy. Between that and the Helix, I'm pretty much a roadside attraction. It doesn't bother me much except for the tour busses in my driveway.

Well if it makes you feel any better, I'll relate a recent experience. I was riding down a busy street and came to a stop next to a black VW TDI with 3 people in it. The young man and woman in the front were laughing and pointing at me. I suspect they were throwing insults my way from their body language and head shakes. I always wear earplugs under my helmet, so I only saw their jaws flapping.

But, in the back seat was a VERY attractive young lady who was intently scrutinizing me and my Buddy. Her eyes were like lazers. The light turned and I pulled away. He must've taken that as an insult to his manhood, because he floored it to blow past me. As he did, the attractive young lady in the back seat still had her eyes locked on me and my Buddy. As they blew by, she did a complete swivel and continued to look out the back window. She then threw me a big smile and thumbs up. I had to turn so I waved back as I did.

Hopefully my Buddy just won over a young and beautiful new scooter rider. A few more of those and the tide could turn to being something cool from coast to coast.

Not quite as bad, but yesterday I was at the meeting point for a group ride with my BV350 - all 400lbs, 16" wheels and nearly 6' wheelbase of it - and a guy eating breakfast nearby asked " How big is the engine, like a 125? At least he knew it was a scooter.

How was Tag's? I will make it up there someday, really! Got in from Tampa late the night before and just didn't have the motivation to get out of bed that morning.

Ha ha! I get lots of looks and a few questions on my little C3 at the grocery store when I park it at the bike rack.
Still, I have only seen 4 other scoots around here in 3 years: a Vespa, a Yamaha Zuma 50, a Honda Elite 80, and a Honda Helix.

Actually, that guy was at Joe's Farm Grill. Tag's and the ride was good, but I wasn't expecting 107 on the way home

Well if it makes YOU feel any better, his car just dropped in resale by 10% and may require modifications reducing the performance and/or fuel mileage.

I wish I really knew how to do a wheelie on my scoots. I seem to get a lot of requests for those from construction crews and young men waiting for the bus.
