Oil Filter Guard on Buddy 170i

The metal guard underneath the oil filter/oil cooler on my Buddy 170i blocks the removal of the oil filter. Do I just bend that guard down a bit or am I missing something here?

it faces straight out, so you should just be able to unscrew it from there. DO NOT bend the guard
.
Most of the filters have a 17mm socket, so you can just use that to back it off.

It would
not come straight out because the guard was in the way. I bent it just enough for the filter to clear it and that was all that it needed to get it out. My filter had a 21mm socket on it.

oops, I was totally wrong on the socket size, sorry!
did the guard get smashed or anything? I helped a friend take his off of the 170i, and it backed right off, no bending needed.

I took the guard off on my first oil change so I wouldn't have to deal with it. Should be ok if I don't hit any large objects.

I have no problem changing the filter by pushing down on the sheet metal. I move it out of the way just enough to remove / replace the filter, and it simply springs back into place. It seems more like a tray to collect debris and oil from the filter housing than a guard.

I found it easier to just unbolt the guard on mine. That made it much easier to access the filter without barking my knuckles. Gave it a good wipedown for crud and bolted it back on after I got the new filter installed. The old filter was one of those slotted buggers and would have been a beyotch to remove otherwise.

We have had similar results on each of our three 170's. Seems the tolerances are just a tad tight. On mine I have had to loosen the guard yet on the other two it just does clear the lip on the front.
It did make me wonder if it had been bent or pressed up just enough to block the removal.
