So on a basically windless day, my Hooligan which now has 1500 miles got up to 69 indicated (which is about 62 actual) in a fairly flat location. It's also been feeling 'gutsier' for the last couple hundred miles. It's the first time in a while I've taken it to work and had a longer road to work with.
At 1100 miles it would only go 63 indicated in the same location and similar conditions.
I understood the break in to be about 500-1000 miles. So is it pretty common that a Genuine engine has maybe a little longer break in? I'm honestly curious. I've only been doing the scooter thing for a year.
How long before a Genuine scooter motor is truly broken in?

My Hooligan was very tight when new - it loosens up a lot after 1,200 miles.Greyscoot wrote:I know my Hoolie was pretty tight when new. I only have about 800 miles on mine, but it has slowly gained speed over time. Mine will now hit 64 indicated on the flat. It sounds like it might get even faster. Apparently, it takes a while to fully break in.
Enjoy your ride.

Re: How long before a Genuine scooter motor is truly broken
I must be the new guy on the block as far as a Hooligan is concerned. Mine just turned 350 miles so I'm still trying to keep it under 50 mph and not go at one constant speed for a long period of time per the user's manual. At what mileage would it be safe for me to go WOT to see how I compare to the rest of you Hooliganites? With my 170i Italia I think I waited til the clock hit 500 before I finally opened it up.MrIcky wrote:So on a basically windless day, my Hooligan which now has 1500 miles got up to 69 indicated (which is about 62 actual) in a fairly flat location. Sounds like I wasn't imagining things and the mileage where it's picking up is consistent with others.
As far as 'break in procedure', that's a whole different topic and I'm not an expert. For the first 500 miles I just varied the speed a lot and tried not to hold at full throttle for anything longer than a few seconds to get up to speed. I stuck to city riding and stayed off the higher speed back roads.
I guess it worked.
