Modern Buddy

What is this part? On my 2006 Buddy 50, there is this part bolted to the exhaust bracket. The hose appears to go around towards the front of the engine. The same part is absent on my fiancée's 2009 Buddy 50.

I'm guessing that it is a crankcase ventilation device/filter. If the hose going toward the engine is connected to either the valve cover or crankcase, then that's what it is.

That's part of the emissions system. It takes half of the exhaust and runs it through that canister to clean it. Both bikes should have it.

I believe avescoots got it right. I just looked at the parts diagram for this part and it refers to it as a SAI (secondary air injection) device.

Resurrecting this thread, and cross-posting it to other threads, because it comes up in relevant keyword searches.

I'm replacing the original 2009 rear tire on my Buddy 50, and while removing the muffler I broke the ears off of this "mystery device" that not all Buddy 50s even possess. It is not really an exhaust FILTER but an exhaust INJECTION system labeled "optional" on the Buddy 50 parts diagram. It pumps a bit of air into the exhaust so there is enough O2 to combust any residual fuel left in the exhaust.

The replacement canister is a little difficult to find, and costs about $50 - Genuine part P22861020002. Only scooterloungeonline.com and some Danish scooter shops appear to carry it. Aftermarket exhausts don't interface with it, so it can't possibly be necessary. While the "extra" pipe on the exhaust can be plugged off easily enough, it isn't clear how to best handle the air supply side if this system is bypassed.

It's pretty common for them to break, I've seen multiple held on by a single zip tie wrapped around the canister body. Seems to work fine. The hoses will hold it in place if it came loose.
