Modern Buddy

I'm possibly getting a Buddy 50 or Roughhouse 50 and seeking info about 2t oil and fuel octane recommendations; I would be running the scoot in stock configuration (minus the restrictor ring in the exhaust and the restrictor clamp in the CVT); I visit a variety of shops in the local area and there is no real consensus about 2t oils...examples of 2t oils for injection systems:

Aprilia dealer using Valvoline Multi Purpose 2t oil; Honda-Yamaha-Suzuki dealer carrying 2t oils labeled Honda, Yamalube, and Suzuki CC; an independent shop has Amsoil Synthetic Injector oil and BelRay Mineral 2t oil; Cycle Gear carrying Castrol and Motul synthetic oils; Autozone & Advanced Auto Parts carrying a variety of multi purpose oils from Coastal, Valvoline, Pennzoil, and Havoline; Walmart has multi purpose oils by SuperTech, QuikSilver, and Pennzoil; this is a sampling of stuff available...

virtually every multi purpose oil carries the rating/certification for NMMA TCW3 which is for marine/outboard motors and that opens another Pandora's box about using marine 2t oil in an air-cooled scooter...

as far as fuel I usually keep 87 octane since both of my bikes run good on it...would a Buddy 50 or Roughhouse run well with 87 octane or should I use 89 mid grade or 91+ high grade?

As for oil I can't really help since I don't have a 2t Genuine, but when I had my Honda Elite 50 2t I just bought a gallon of the Super Tech from Walmart since that was the cheapest stuff I could find(sold the scooter with 7700 miles and it was still running like a champ.)

I use Yamalube 2stroke oil for pre-mix/oil injector. Has a Zuma bug eye as one on the vehicles on the front-thats means its good!. Cheap gas (87 octane) is fine too. Not sure what yours will be, but a liter/quart of Yamahalube last about 600 miles before the low oil light starts to flash during braking.

87 octane, and Spectro here.

Motul 710. Best 2T oil out there. 87 is fine.

Been running Spectro in everything 2T for decades. It works great, but I can't fault the 710 either. Good stuff.

My local dealer has this Draggons oil that comes from Scooter works, I run the synthetic.

It smells like cookies, I like cookies.

I have a second bike that uses Yamalube, It's a Honda which is weird I know but that's what was in the tank when I got it and I figured since the prior owner was using it I'd keep using it too.

Spectro red (dino) just because it smokes a little more than the synthetic version (although I kinda want to try the draggons cookie oil now... Thanks John ) and 92 octane (no reason other than I'm used to running it in other bikes).

sounds like a mixed bag of products here...

the thing that I find weird (almost hilarious) is that Aprilia SR 2-stroke 50's are very expensive ($3K + MSRP) and that dealer uses/sells a cheap multi purpose oil ($5/qt) to protect the innerds of the engine; now I wanna see a copy of the owners' manual to see what certifications/ratings the manufacturer wants for the 2t oil...

took me a while to get some info on Aprilia's recommendation...Agip City 2t oil

a retail site in the UK stated it is a synthetic blend; the pds provided by ENI (I guess Agip is one of their brands) states it contains synthetic base stocks & meets the certifications/ratings of API TC & JASO FC which places it as a low ash synthetic blend oil meant for air cooled engines; primary use is injection but can also be used as pre-mix...interesting

I have a few friends that rune the Ipone strawberry stuff. Its bizarre riding down the road smelling strawberries behind a Stella or a Lammy. The Dragon cookie stuff is their vanilla scented oil; they have not made it anymore. Stock up

As to the oil? Run good stuff, simply put, you get what you pay for. Take it from a guy who has done cylinder boring for over 20 years. The oil matters.

Bummer on them not making the Draggons oil anymore.

Bald John used to run an oil additive to his bike that smelled kinda like Banana back in the day.

I spilled some of that additive in my car once when transporting it home from a rally and I ended up having to have the car detailed and odor bombed twice to get the smell out.

I remember all those available scents.

I have a buddy that drives a mercedes grease car diesel . You can totally tell when he gets used oil from the donut shop!!!

I run Spectre oil because that is what the dealer recommended. All I needed to know.

While your dealer recommended a great oil, I am not in the habit of taking a dealer's word for anything.

thanks y'all for the info...at this point I consider the subject closed; between independent research and feedback on several forums I have a good idea what I want to use if a 2-stroke Genuine scooter is in my future...

as far as taking dealer input...to each his own; I gravitate toward independent shops that work on a wide variety of machines..I try to get a consensus between experienced shop owners and experienced mechanics; sometimes they agree and sometimes they don't...

On the subject of oil, are there any issues with switching to synthetic? I have no idea what came in my roughhouse and I can ask the dealer what they put in (or topped it off with).

I use dyno for engine and bearing break in and then switch to synthetic.

As far as consistency honestly I kinda stay consistent. When the scooter super store was closing Motul was $4 a quart...I bought 2 cases. Klotz was $4 a quart...I bought 2 cases..I won 4 qts of royal purple at sleep away camp...I ran that.

In my kitted motors I stay steady ..either Motul or Klotz. In my GS or SS which are a 5% mix...I'll toss anything in there...5% is a butload of oil in a tank!

Sorry if I was not clear. I just don't know what's in it now and wanted to start using a synthetic like one of the ones recommended here ( just need ot see who sells what close by). Once I pick I'll stick with it.

Start using a good synth don't worry about mixing.

They can all be mixed with one another EXCEPT Castor bean oil. The Syns will mix just fine with the dino stuff. Don't sweat that.
