Funky Oil Filter

Buddy 125 here. Ready to do an oil change today and found the in-use filter to be non-standard.

Instead of a hexagonal shape to fit the wrench for removal, there is a round thing with a giant notch in it. Looks like something would fit in the notch to twist off the oil filter, but no screwdriver I have is big enough to gain purchase. Plus, it's the rather slippery surface of the oil filter.

Has anyone ever seen one of these filters, and/or have any ideas how to get it off? My replacement filter has the standard hexagon on the end.

I had to make a tool at work to remove the filter, basically a socket with a wedge welded to the end and ground down to fit the slot. Now I'm on the "standard" socket ended filters. I'm not sure how others got that old style filter off, but someone will reply I'm sure.

I think it would be worth it if you plan on continuing using the slotted filters. I use the filters with the "bolt " head

To get yours off I would use a strap wrench or go commando and put a couple of holes in it and turn it off with a screwdriver. You may also be able to get some BFCLs on it but there may not be enough room.

take a long file and use it like a screwdriver. Take channellocks or even pliers and turn the file with that for leverage.Just turn it enough to loosen it and then use your hand to finish the job.

slotted filter tool:

I bought tool for the HiFlo Filtro oil filters that have the slotted head that is sold by Scooter West; it fits a ratchet and makes loosening easy with a ratchet extension; prior to that I used an allen wrench that was big enough to fit the slot (use long part in the slotted head of filter and turn until loose enough to turn by hand)...wore a pair of cheap work gloves to prevent injuring my hand if the allen wrench slipped
