Royal Alloy Grand Prix 300 S

Post by scootERIK »

Word on the street is the Royal Alloy GP300 is shipping in April, AND the retail price is $5699!

In my opinion $5699 is a pretty darn good price. Hopefully there will be some good colors available.

I'm going to do my best to get a test ride when the local dealer gets them in.

I just found some pictures! I like both colors, I would probably go with black since most of my scooters have been black but that white is nice too.

85 mph top speed means it should be able to easily cruise 55-65 mph all day. It's nice to see it has ABS.

I think they have a typo on the 2.1v usb charger, I think that should be 5v at 2.1 amp?

Is this thru Genuine still? Hope my shop gets one. They never had a 150 RA to my knowledge.

Yes, this is a Genuine scooter, or at least a Genuine imported scooter. From what I saw I believe each dealer can get 2 if they want from this first delivery.

If anyone is serious about buying one you need to get to your dealer right away. Within minutes of my local dealer posting one was already sold.

I also read that the motor is GTS derived, though not the HPE version. I've been meaning to check out my better Genuine dealers new showroom. Might have an excuse now.

I think I've seen these listed on UK dealers sites, they look awesome and must be good if they are Genuine.

I was on the Genuine website and decided to do a little digging and I found out that the Royal Alloy 300 has been added. But you can only get to it by typing in the web address, or you can use this link-

I had planned on getting a mid size motorcycle this summer, but the Royal Alloy 300 may be a real contender for me.

Could somebody explain the allure of a carbureted [edit: my bad, it is indeed fuel injected] 300cc scooter with no underseat storage? I hope Genuine sells a million of them, and carburetors are not an issue for me personally, but I just don’t get the value proposition when the BV 400 exists (not to mention used GTS 300s).

I fear Genuine may be going down a path of death by a thousand SKUs. There are no efficiency or branding benefits on this path. I see the logic in having an electric brand (NIU), a small displacement brand (Buddy/RH), and a large displacement brand (RA), but their lineup is developing so much duplication, interference, and overlap that it’s hard to discern what’s going on.

Maybe all the operational scale comes from the size of their suppliers, but they still have to have a retail brand that makes some sense for people to know what to expect. Brio? Chicago? Kick? Urbano? Rattler? Hooligan? Total confusion vs. Honda, Yamaha, Piaggio/Vespa.

Whoops, yes indeed it is FI. I understand the 300 a little better. I still don’t get the carbed 150 though.

Both efi and carbs have benefits, depending on your situation.

If you want to modify the engine, get a carbureted scoot.
If you want to be able to kick start the scoot when the battery is dead, get a scoot with a carb (there are a few exceptions)

If you want to just enjoy riding a scoot with a stock engine, by all means get efi!

That is pretty typical of new models.
You can add some color with aftermarket grips, top case, cheeky seat, etc.

My wife wanted an aqua (sea foam?) colored Buddy at purchase time, but we could not find one in stock.
She bought a white buddy and added an aqua cheeky seat cover.
She has been very happy with that.

Its finally April. Did anybody see a Royal Alloy 300 at their Genuine dealer this weekend? I hope so.

Below is a link to a recent mid size scooter shootout. Even though the Royal Alloy has a 100cc displacement disadvantage compared to the Burgy and BV, it would have been nice if they could have included it. The RA costs a couple of grand less, but should have compared favorably.

Was told that the 300's are indeed on U.S. soil, but held up on the railway temporarily, then hopefully on to the dealers by the first week in May.
Often from what I have read, is that the dealers have no idea when it gets there, until it gets there. Let's see what the truck delivered today as they are opening crates. The sadistic side of me wants to hold on for the British colors, while the true me who has been waiting, it seems like 4 ever just wants to park his ass on the black Royal Alloy GP300 pronto!

I found out the motor is a Chinese made GTS pre-HPE. That doesn't really concern me because the British press have had these for awhile and I don't recall reading about any problems with the motors BUT I have one China company that I will forever stay away from. CFMoto! Yuck! I'm trying to find out if their the manufacturers of said Royal Alloy motor but I highly doubt it. I'm still waiting for my local dealer to get one on the sales floor.

Got to take a GP 300 S out for a quick test ride today(the white one in the picture below.) While only a short ride I was overall quite impressed. Lots of power and it felt good in the corners, though this was a basically new scooter with only 250 miles on it so I didn't hammer on it too hard. Acceleration felt very similar to the 2018 Vespa GTS 300 I test rode a few weeks ago, it doesn't feel like it is accelerating hard but when you look down you can see how fast the MPH are going up. I didn't test top speed but the owner saw 85 MPH(speedometer indicated) and it still had some more in it. The GP300 seems like a pretty darn smooth scooter. After this test ride I am even more interest in getting one.

Looks like it has been up for sale for ~4 weeks. Even has some mods done. In my opinion the price is pretty good too. I am curious why it is up for sale, and how many miles it has.

Has anyone heard when the next batch of GP300 scooters will start showing up?

I keep hoping that more Royal Alloy owners will join the site and share their experience. I have done a little looking around to find more reviews from US owners but there's not many out there. If any GP300 owners are reading this let us know what kind of real world MPG, MPH, and miles per tank you are getting and how many miles you have ridden? And how are you liking the scooter overall after putting some miles on it?

The Genuine site has three new colors listed for the GP300s. Azure Blue, Creme/Burgundy, and Sherwood Green. We will have to wait to see what the creme/burgundy will look like but I was able to find the other two colors. I think that blue is going to be a good seller.

My semi-local Genuine dealer got the new RA300's in stock. I might go check them out one day. My wife will rightfully remind me that the dealer, should I need warranty help, is 100 miles away. Then she will remind me how haphazard their service side is. Then she'll point out that there is no under seat storage on the RA300. But I still want to see one in person.

I keep hoping someone on MB will buy a RA 300 and put some miles on it so we can hear what it's like to own. I did some digging on FB and from what I could find most posts were from people like me who are curious about the RA 300. The problem is most of the replies are from people who don't even own the scooter talking about how it's a bad scooter.

I've yet to see a video that shows how to remove the passenger footrest for CVT access, and how difficult the foot rest section is to remove. I was hoping Robot would have done a how-to by now. That's the only thing stopping me from considering one. It seems Lambretta got revenge from beyond the grave when someone crammed a Vespa automatic motor in one. I also have yet to see one in person.

I can deal with valve checks being a PITA. If the first one is in spec you know I'll mostly skip the second one, then check them on the third time. Outside of a tight engine bay I've not seen any horrible reviews. It's an older generation Vespa motor WITHOUT the P.A.D.S. system loaded into the ECU, that alone is a huge plus for me. Its just that revenge from beyond the grave thing with the passenger footrest making simple CVT work a nightmare. Robot, PLEASE make a how-to video! Perhaps we should email him a suggestion?

So, Tony's Garage on You Tube has a "Part 2 Fitting Dr. Pulley Sliders" video update and he shows a easier way to remove the transmission cover. I'm not 100% sold yet BUT if I decide to get a Royal Alloy it won't be my commuter for work. The Buddy 125 is my work horse, mostly because my commute works perfectly for the 125 engine. I just want something faster and fancier for joy rides. I did learn something interesting....

Another 300cc scooter that I like is the new Keeway Sixties. By very popular rumor its motor is also the same base motor as what comes on the Royal Alloy 300-aka Vespa derived. The Keeway has under seat storage as well! But if I'm being truly honest it doesn't look nearly as good as the Royal Alloy. I need to go and see the RA in person. I'm pretty sure my semi-local dealership will let me take it for a test ride, something I'll never get to do with a Keeway. My trailer connector on my Subaru is still shorted out and I've yet to get a small receiver on my Honda Fit so that will keep me from impulse buying!

The Keeway Sixties is kind of interesting. I was really hoping Genuine would work with PGO to do something similar(plastic scooter with the Vespa 300 clone engine.) I just checked and there are 3 Keeway dealers within 50 miles of me but none of them have any Keeways in stock, which is a little concerning to me, but maybe these new models having arrived yet. Also, I'm not an early adopter I like to know what I'm getting. Now if Keeway wanted to let me borrow one for a little while to do some durability testing on I would happily put 1-2k+ a month on it. If I was buying I would get the Royal Alloy since I have more trust in Genuine to take care of any warranty issues that might come up and my local dealer sells them.

Also, while do some quick research I noticed the Genuine website has the curb weight of Royal Alloy 300 at 335 pound but the owner's manual has curb weight list at 366 pounds. Maybe the manual is wet and the website is dry? The Keeway Sixties is listed 322 pounds(146kg) dry weight.

The Keeway Sixties does look pretty interesting. The spec sheet lists Bosch ABS, KYB suspension and 19 HP.

It looks like they are mostly being sold through dealerships that already carry Benelli motorcycles, some of which have been established for a few years now. None of the dealership I checked have any of the Keeway models listed either. I think I saw somewhere they are new to the US market for 2024, maybe their introduction has been held up somewhere along the line.

It's 19 kw which equals almost 25.5 hp, and the Keeway has 1 more newton meter of torque, roughly .73 foot pound. I wonder if Keeway has a different tune on their Vespa clone 300, or if it was testing differently. If it is putting out 25hp this thing could be faster than a 2024 Vespa 300 HPE. That makes the Sixties an even more interesting scooter.

The best reviews for the Keeway scooters are on YouTube and they're out of India. The reviewers speak very good English and don't mince words. I signed up for the Keeway newsletters and have revived nothing. But if you go on the Keeway website you want the Keeway America website, emphasis on America. I signed up for the "other" Keeway website in the United States. Keeway America is the correct site. The only Binelli dealer I have focuses on ATV and other off-road vehicles but I still might go and check the dealer out.

I just want something retro looking that can do the short hops on the interstate. I don't really want something that looks like a spaceship and has excess technology like a spaceship! And I want a key, a key without a anti-theft chip. I know how to use a lock thru the wheel. I live in a semi-'hood, you lock it or loose it here!

Ah, there is a discrepancy between the Sixties specs on the website vs. the linked PDF brochure. I was looking at the PDF brochure where power is listed 14.0kw/19.0 HP at 6500 rpm (website: 19.0kW at 8250 rpm) and torque of 22.0 N-m/16.2 lbs/ft at 6000rpm (website: 24.0N·m at 7000 rpm.) I wonder which is correct?

I'd bet it's 19hp. The non-HPE Piaggio version was only 21hp.

I do like the character of it. But, I also have a Malaguti Yesterday as a project and I found it pretty cool too. :P

After another look around I am finding multiple kw numbers for the Royal Alloy 300.

Genuine has it listed at 21.5 hp or about 16kw.
Royalalloy.com has it at 18.5 kw at 7,500 rpms or about 24.8 hp, and 23 Nm at 5,000 rpms
I have seen a few website listing it in the ~24 hp range, and a few that say 21.5 hp and 23 Nm.
I did a quick search for a dyno chart but couldn't find one.

Maybe the US is getting detuned versions of the 300 for emissions? OR maybe the Genuine Royal Alloy 300 has more HPs than we are being told? Maybe Vespa is making the clone engine builder list the engines at less hp as part of the contract they made?

I'm really curious what is going on, but I don't see getting a good answer anytime soon.

I'd argue that the 21.5hp is closest to reality. Piaggio rates the new HPE 300 at 23.5hp and it was a significant change from the older QUASAR engine.

At what point does a hobby become an addiction? I'm uncertain, but after the twelfth scooter, it sorta feels like the latter...

Seriously...I've lost count...

Seven mopeds ...that's still manageable...
