Honda Metropolitan versus Buddy 50?

Post by Scootergoddess »

Which is faster? (Without mods)? Anyone ridden both snd able to share their opinion? I have owned two Metropolitans but am thinking of buying a Buddy this time.

The Buddy 50 is quite a bit faster because the Buddy is a 2 stroke 50, while the Metro is a 4 stroke 50. The Metro is pretty pokey.

And the Buddy 50 cost me about $300 less out the door! I love her - she’s ming green, named her Julep (I live in Lexington KY) and I could not be happier. I already rode her to and from work once (8 miles each way) and had zero issues keeping up with traffic. And I am riding her gingerly, no more than half throttle, during break in). I am soooo glad I chose this scooter!!!

The Honda Metropolitan is the most tepid performer of any 50cc scooter I have ever ridden (and I say that as someone who is generally a Honda fan). You made the right choice.

would be better off comparing the 02-05 yamaha vino 50 to the buddy 50...at least they are both 2 strokes but the 2 stoke vinos are old...or a pre-2012 yamaha zuma 50

Point37, if your'e talking used scooters then yes, but new choices are limited. Your choices for a new quality 50cc are:
Genuine Buddy 50cc. 2-stroke greatness.
Genuine RH50. I see a bunch on the road for a reason. Also 2-stroke.
Honda Metropolitan. I actually like the Metro. Super reliable, quiet and clean.
Honda Ruckus. Cool also.
The MANY versions of KYMCO. Great product with hit and miss dealer support.
SYM/Lance. Their 50's are kinda slow but nice.
ADLY. IF you can find them they are also 2-stroke greatness.
HYOSUNG. I loved my 2-stroke Sense.
Vespa. Premium price for a nice product. Not the fastest,
Piaggio. Great product if you have a dealer nearby.
These are what I recommend if asked.
I'm shocked that Genuine still manages to import their 2-strokes with the tightening emissions. Every year I tell myself to grab a RH50 before they become a 4-stroke.

I'm thinking that Genuine is figuring out how to transition directly from their 2T 50s to the electric scooter equivalent without a 4T step in between. Good for them!

They (Genuine) distribute the NIU escooters. And Genuine is basically a re-branding company so that would be a logical choice. I'm still down for a quality esccoter that meets my needs.
