Riding and Carpal Tunnel

Post by KABarash »

Well snow shovelling season has beaten the crap out of me, as others as well. My Carpal Tunnel in both arms has been seriously exasperated, now I'm conscerned how this is going to effect my riding, I know it will, if spring ever gets here. I've had issues off and on pretty much my whole riding career.
Any new suggestions from you all out there?

Thanks

Take an anti-inflammatory and rest up for the riding season.

That's pretty much what I've been trying to do, but the last snowfall (8 inches) hasn't let me "rest up". Now the damned burning numbness is waking me at night. I can't wait till spring!

Do you have a brace to reduce further injury?

Will likely be purchasing two this week. S'pose I'll be wearing them pretty much all the time for a while.
Currious now, how difficult would it be to wear them while riding?

My suggestion is that you consider moving to the desert Southwest. I've been riding almost every day since I got here in early January. This week's weather forecast: low 80s and zero percent chance of rain.

Bill in Seattle but currently wintering in Tucson

Larger diameter grips on the handlebars may help.

Had that for 30 years.

Numb or painful hands related to CT when riding is either from vibration or from pressure from having the wrist held in the wrong position.

The key is to try not hold your wrist bent and do NOT use a death grip on the grips. Hold on lightly and see what happens. Works all the time for me and my throttle hand would go through pain into complete numbness before I discovered the key.

Larger grips and thickly padded gloves only served to make mine worse so I don't think that's what you want.

Loosen your grip and keep pressure off your wrists.

I had a hapless doctor tell me the cure was to not ride a motorbike. He's not my doctor anymore.

Another thing that helps loosening the right hand grip is a "Throttle Rocker"

It's critical to install it in a safe position to avoid a runaway mistake.

I have it really bad too. I use the "Cramp buster" plastic clamp on my throttle grip and it really helps. Buy at any motorcycle shop.

I also put Unker's ointment (buy at Amazon, ect.) right on my palm at the location of the median nerve, then put a glove over it at night. Google for pics of where the median nerve is located. Then apply ointment/ice there.

I learned for some reason I would wake up every night with excruciating pain. The ointment and glove did the trick.

Also, buy some gel bicycling gloves to wear while riding. Cuts down the effects of road vibration.

Wrist guards to keep the wrists from moving at night also help as does ibuprofen and icing the areas. Wrist guards at any drug store or I use Rollerblade wrist guards with the clamp removed.

It WILL get better. I've had it really bad this winter due to handling items for my job and I am doing the above and it is helping.

A few years ago I told my doctor about how my bikes made my wrist hurt.
His reply was "don't ride a motorcycle".
My reaction was "you're not my doctor anymore".
