Is this a good deal for Buddy 170i?

Post by Tdollarhyde »

Hey y’all!

I caught the scooter bug and I’m dying to get my butt onto a Buddy 170i.

Our scooter shop in town got a Buddy 170i in stock at a price I think -might- be a good deal but I’m not too sure! It’s killing me because I don’t want to make a mistake overpaying but I don’t want to buy brand new.

Also, the color isn’t my ideal but I’m thinking it is an easy color to work with for modifications. Should I wait for my ideal color or should I spring at the scooter for this price?

Price: $2100
Miles: 1127
Damage: some light scratching on front fender and sun fading.

As always, the answer is "it depends".

Your profile doesn't say where you are. But the real question is "what additional fees does the dealer add on?"

I looked at a couple used scooters at dealers when I was shopping. Several dealers add a $400 DMV fee (which is BS) and various other fees. In Nevada, a used vehicle dealer will collect sales tax on a used vehicle, while a private party sale is tax-free. That means another $150 or so.

I looked at a Burgman 400 that was priced at $1999. But by the time the dealer tacked on fees and tax, it was well over $3k!

$2100 give or take is a fair price for this scooter. But what's the out-the-door price? Does your locality collect sales tax on both dealer and private party sales?

It's not a great price. I would never spend that much on 7 year old 170 when for a little more I could buy a brand new Buddy 125 with a 2 year warranty(I believe there is a special going on now that extends that to 3 years.)

If you are still interested offer $1500 trying to get them down to $1700-1800. If you do pay more than $1800 then you need them to install new tires since the ones on the scooter are over 5 years old(you can still ride them but they won't be as good as new tires.) Also, they should put new brake fluid in since it is probably 7 years old as well.

Just for comparison:

It's a 2017 Buddy 170i for $1699.

I’m located here in Austin, TX

I think you guys are right. It’s a 2013 which is kind of old to be paying 2100 and with the dealer fees it will bring it to like 2400 is what they told me.

I think I’d be better off going with something else.. wish there were more Buddy’s around my area :(

I bought a 9 month old 170i with 95 miles for $2,000. I'm in Denver, which is a year round scooter town. I prefer to buy from a private party. Get a 125. Not a whole lot of difference in performance and less money.

One big positive is that the scooter has low mileage. You can always make a reasonable offer and walk away if it is rejected. Here, we have to pay sales tax on any vehicle bought from a private party.
As to not having many scooters to choose from, I follow the Genuine scooters for sale on Craigslist in all of MN and not all that many come along. Mostly they are 50 cc Buddys and the asking prices are not esp. low. Currently, there is just one and it's a 2006 Buddy 125 with 8500 miles and needs work. Not every purchase has to be a "good deal" or a "steal". I'd look for a fair price on a scooter I really liked. Good luck.

Put that location in your profile so it appears under your username to the left. In this case, it will help others bring local bikes for sale to your attention. In other cases, it will help members respond to your questions about service, parts, riding opportunities, etc.

You know, I did see that! It looked like a good deal but almost too good you know? Also, I’m not sure I’m sold on the sea foam green color although it does stand out..

I tried to get the dealer to install new tires on the 170i but it looks like the owner of it doesn’t want to put anymore money into it for the sale because the dealership wants 250 for new tires with installation.

You might want to put your location under your name. Others can help you better if they know where you are.

That is pretty well within the range of used Buddy 125 scooters for this area. I've bought two Buddys from the Austin area and paid about this amount with a few more miles on them (one came with lots of other accessories including a scooter carrier for me hitch). Both have been very solid. I bet that the bike is a solid bike overall. The color can be painted or select body panels can be replaced to get you a unique color combo. I live up in College Station, TX and would buy this Buddy if I was in the market for one. The only thing that would scare me off this bike is if there was a title issue that the seller didn't reveal.
