[NSR] Cowboys and Aliens
Ok, Larry Crowne was good and all but I haven't wanted to see a movie this much since Serenity. It better not suck.

I have mixed feelings about this film.
The company behind it are a comics "publisher" who signed a bunch of contracts with writers and artists promising to produce their work as graphic novels, and then work with Hollywood on the movie rights (for a huge cut). But the only book they've actually published (this one) involved loads of kickbacks to retailers to order copies of it to sell at closeout prices, just so it would register as a "hot seller" in terms of units ordered. All as a scam to get a good price on the movie rights.
The trailer of the movie looks promising, and they obviously signed some good talent to work on it, but I fear it has about as much creative integrity behind it as Space Invaders: The Movie.

Left of center is sometimes a good thing. Remember when "Shawn of The Dead" came out? I didn't see it in the theaters because I though "Romantic Comedy, with Zombies? Suck."

Cowboys and Indians has been beat to death. But add Aliens, spaceships, laser fire, and some kinda plot..... I'm there.
My friend and I are planning on seeing this just because it looks like a "fun stupid" movie.
Can't wait for Cowboys and Scooters .

When I first heard the title I thought 'this sound stupid', then I noticed who was directing it and I thougth 'hhmmmm, OK this could work'.

Don't be so sure. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen; a different Bond, playing the character that Indy is ripped off from, with La Femme Nikita, and some other promising bits thrown in, and with a better graphic novel pedigree. It sucked.Syd wrote:^^I know; Bond, Indy, and 13, all in one movie. It can't suck.
I'm not saying this will. Just don't be so sure it won't.

Sheesh, what a buzz kill. But really, when is the last time Sean Connery played a real character? He's like Christopher Walken and a few others - they are now typecast into caricatures of themselves (except that Balls of Fury rocked!).TVB wrote:Don't be so sure. The first trailer I saw for this movie in a theater, both my wife and I were laughing our asses off. We thought it was a comedy. Come to find out, we weren't the only ones laughing at it, and the studio revised the entire trailer. IT'S NOT A COMEDY. srsly? could have fooled me......wait, you did..hahahahahahahhaha
Captain America, is the only movie I'm even remotely interested in seeing right now because Hugo Weaving is the MF RED SKULL!!!!!! "It is inevitable Cpt. America......."

Don't think Cowboys & Aliens was going for complex plot twists!pugbuddy wrote:Pretty sure I'll see it but it looks like they gave the whole movie away in the trailer, which usually signifies "suck".
I'm iffy on Captain America. Weaving, good. Otherwise, iffy cast, iffy director, iffy writers. I'll still see it. I saw Green Lantern and I KNEW it was going to suck. (It did.)
More excited about Harry Potter. I'm not a HUGE HP fan—I'd stab myself in the leg before I calling someone a "Muggle"—but the movies have been good and this one looks great.
And I'm REALLY looking forward to Tintin and Dark Knight Rises.

Cold comfort, perhaps, or maybe validation, or maybe none of that, but the local review at least mentioned Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, who's name shows up in Wikipedia as one of the writers of the graphic novel and is listed in the writer's credits for the movie on IMDB. I probably won't actually go see it until next week, but it still looks promising.TVB wrote:I have mixed feelings about this film.

We saw it last night too. I expected more as always but it was a fun film.

That's actually the guy who ran the scam; getting a "writer" credit (he didn't even come up with the title) was part of it. When he realized that he needed an actual book to publish to get the film greenlit, he hired Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley (minor-league pros, whom he had promised to publish some of their other work) to write it for him, and got a talented artist with no professional credits (one of thousands out there, and dirt cheap if you go overseas like he did) to do the art. The whole story is summarized here.Syd wrote:Cold comfort, perhaps, or maybe validation, or maybe none of that, but the local review at least mentioned Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, who's name shows up in Wikipedia as one of the writers of the graphic novel and is listed in the writer's credits for the movie on IMDB.
