Larry Crowne Promotion - 18 Free Buddys!

Post by Berner »

The Genuine Scooter Company is sponsoring a national campaign to promote the new Universal film "Larry Crowne" starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts.

Beginning this weekend, Universal will run full-color ads in regional newspapers promoting the July 1 premier of this summer's big hit ... which is the story of a 50 year old man (Larry Crowne, played by Hanks) who re-invents himself as he enrolls in college and joins a hip group of scooter riders in LA. "The movie is directed by Hanks, himself, who is real-life a scooter rider and promoter of alternative transportation," says Philip McCaleb, CEO of Genuine. "This is the biggest promotion of Scooter riding and scooter culture since Ace Face and the Who."

50 Genuine riders will accompany Tom Hanks on an escorted Scooter convoy through the streets of Hollywood en route to the "Larry Crowne" world premier on June 27th. "We can't wait, we're all riding together and the rumor is that Julia Roberts will be joining us riding in a 'Larry Crowne' taxi - a Genuine Stella scooter with a Scooterworks Rocket Sidecar!" said McCaleb. "This is a perfect summer for scooters to re-emerge as the growing alternative to people wanting 100 MPG plus with the new reality of high gas prices."

As part of the promotion for Hanks' new movie, 18 US cities will have contests to win opening-night tickets, and Genuine will be sponsoring a grand prize in each city ... a brand new Genuine St. Tropez Buddy 150 cc scooter! (look for an ad in the local paper similar to the image, above, in concert with local Genuine dealers' ads).

I am entering this! I feel bad because I already have a buddy...Ok no I don't feel bad! It looks like you may have to go to a dealer to enter. this works great as I am getting my new tire this week.

I wish there was a way to get in on that ride...I just can't see how I could get my Buddy up there mid week...well I guess I would need to be invited too

Cool (But 50 restored Riva 180s would be even cooler.) Yamaha should be jumping on this bandwagon.

They couldn't tell us what cities they're doing the promotion in? I mean, I get the newspaper everyday anyway (yeah, I'm old), but it'd be nice to know whether I need to look through the Sports section, the Religion section, the Home & Garden section.... hoping to find the advert.

I got the invite with 2 free tickets for the screening from Route 66 scooters in Marina Del Rey. We are riding out with a police escort - 6 police bikes clearing the way! - to the premiere at Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood.

Woo hoo!

Great job Phil!

TVB, not sure where to look in Michigan, but you can enter here @ http://washingtonexaminer.com/community ... I don't know if the movie tickets will be redeemable, but if you win the Tropaz, you can fly out and ride it home.

I'm entered, woo hoo! Please keep this thread updated so we can see the premier, it should be awesome. Hey Skootz, are you escorting Tom?

Nice interview Phil. I can't believe the host mentioned Vespa right at the end.
Wasn't he paying attention? Yeesh.

Yep -- the same one you saw. I know the local dealer doesn't have the cash to go in (co-op money or no) on a newspaper ad, so... not playing. :(

That pretty much answers my question. The Genuine dealers in this area are all "... and scooters too" businesses, so I wouldn't expect any of them to get behind a promotional campaign based on the idea of scooter culture.

from what I gather, all I had to do was click on the link for the Washington Examiner. It asked my name, email address, and contact #. The post on the WE website listed Modern Classics (DC) as the local dealer where the Tropaz will come from. Has anyone had any other results on how to enter. The WE is a free publication that is handed out at Metro stations in the morning, so I'll have to pick one up tomorrow and check it out.

In Phx, the ads say to watch a mid-day program... The program goes over what is required in about ten sseconds and doesn't even mention the Buddy.

Only in markets where the local dealer can spend the $1000+ for the co-op newspaper ad.

That was the worst interview I have seen him do! Calling scooter riders dorky. We have enough of a hard time gaining respect from other two wheelers and mentioning he (Genuine) manufactures and designs the scooters he imports which LML and PGO actually do... Love the way the host of the show is offend because he is not put on a Vespa. :fp:

I'll be there as well, meeting in Hollywood. Can't do the ride from the west side; I work a couple blocks from the theater.

Me an' Zee are going.
Guess we'll meet Zilla at Rte 66, and Eric at Hollywood.

Zee will be on a yellow GTS, I'll be on my green Stella w/ stickers (striped front, star decals on cowels, dog barking on glove box...)

I wuz undecided on which scoot to take, but since Rte 66 provided the hook up and (some) of the organization, I'm taking the Stella to represent .

Gotta say, really looking forward to this!

Right on!

I'm going to try to sneak out of here in time to make it to Rt. 66.

Hopefully, my tux won't get wrinkled on the way. ;)

Since you asked… :)
I'm wearing jeans & boots but have a button-down shirt (which I wear for work anyways) and have a casual jacket stashed in my Prima bag.

Not expecting to be asked "who I'm wearing" on the red carpet.

To me, getting all dressed up in a tux or some such thing to go see a scooter movie, is the equivalent of a punk putting on a suit and tie to go see a movie about the Sex Pistols...

I think authentic scooter wear (aka your usual riding gear) is apropos. After all, we are representing the scooter community and should portray our good riding practices. Sure look nice, but keep it real.

That's my 2¢.

Depends on the suit!

Like Sid (and the Chairman before him), I'll do it my wayyyyyyy!

Of course, Sid shot a bunch of people at the end of the song, which I probably won't be doing. But he always had to GO THERE.

We're dorky.

I was talking to a fellow member and rider about this last night. I (obviously) LOVE THE HELL OUT OF SCOOTERS and riding. But it always strikes me when people seem to take the whole thing—from riding, what they ride, vintage vs. modern, scooter "culture," etc.—way too damn seriously. Honestly, we ride scooters. By choice. That makes us a little dorky from the get go. I say embrace it!

I'll pull together pics from the premiere we attended!
