2012 Buddy?
Got my title in the mail today. It says I'm the proud owner of a 2012 Genuine Buddy scooter.... Did I buy a new scooter next year?

Bought 2 Roughhouses. Manufactured 03/11. Titles say 2012. Are we ahead of the curve?

See, this is what we get for joking around about the TARDIS.pugbuddy wrote:Got my title in the mail today. It says I'm the proud owner of a 2012 Genuine Buddy scooter.... Did I buy a new scooter next year?

According to my temporal grammatics instructor at the University of South Gallifrey, the proper verb tense in a situation like this, for something you have already done in the future, is "I would am going to have boughten a new scooter next year". Remember to use the subjunctive mood, because when things get all timey wimey, it becomes a bit tentative and subjective.pugbuddy wrote:Got my title in the mail today. Next year's models are often available in the current year. Same goes for cars, though next year's models are usually available in the fall. The "model year" is separate from year of manufacture.

I seem to remember there being a passage in the HHGTG about verb tenses in time travel, perhaps Douglas Adams was your temporal grammatics instructor?
And seriously, if the shoutout to Adams was intentional, you win geek crown of the week for cross referencing Doctor Who and the Guide.

A good friend of mine says that all the time. It drives me crazy, but curing him of "supposably", "admittingly", and "flustrated" is higher on my to-do list.ericalm wrote:("Boughten?")
Great Scott! I almost mentioned "Starfleet Academy", which would've been a time-travelling trifecta!quiklives wrote:I seem to remember there being a passage in the HHGTG about verb tenses in time travel, perhaps Douglas Adams was your temporal grammatics instructor?

Well, that is certainly the practice in the American auto industry. It is also certainly not the practice in the European scooter industry. I suppose Genuine can do whatever they want. (though it is hard to understand how a valid manufacturers statement of origin for a Taiwan-built scooter can be dated for a year after it was built and 6 months after it was imported into the US )ericalm wrote:Next year's models are often available in the current year.

I got my '06 Vespa LX in '05. 2011 Vespas were available in 2010. So, yeah, they do it too! In the US, at least.Dooglas wrote:It is also certainly not the practice in the European scooter industry.
